"There are two separate cases here. One at which I wasn't present at all, but in which occurrences demanded a certain presence in solidarity. The second is a case of some moments at which I was present but was nevertheless left with the question as to what might have been. The choice toward abstraction, then, allowed me to present an immediate impression as a response, in asking, not “what might have been?” but “what really was?” The answer is not an appeal against history in either case, but a better, more deeply felt understanding in presenting the immediate implications of such occurrences, even with but the briefest of retinal impressions."
