"When I first asked the Tzotzil children [Chiapas, Mexico] to photograph their dreams or fantasies I was worried that they might be disdainful of the idea. For them, dreams play as important a role in understanding the world as do waking events.

I explained as briefly as I could what we would be doing the next day. They giggled excitedly. “Fantasías!” they said, as if both the sound and the idea of the word were funny in a familiar way.

I realized the next day that they knew exactly what I was talking about."
